H13 is a chromium, molybdenum, vanadium hot work tool steel which is characterized by high hardenability and excellent toughness. The molybdenum and vanadium act as strengthening agents. The chromium content assists H13 to resist softening when used at high temperatures. H13 offers an excellent combination of shock and abrasion resistance, and possesses good red hardness. It is capable of withstanding rapid cooling and resists premature heat checking. H13 has good machinability, good weldability, good ductility, and can be formed by conventional means.

Tempering | tool steels are tempered at 482-593°C (900 to 1100°F) for a Rockwell C hardness of 28 to 34. |
Annealing | Annealing takes place at 760-788°C (1400 to 1450°F) and then the steels are cooled slowly in the furnace at a temperature less than 4°C (40°F) per hour. |
Cold Working | tool steels are capable of being readily cold worked by using conventional tooling methods with the alloy in the annealed condition. |
Welding | Conventional methods are used for welding of P20 tool steels. |
Forging | tool steels are forged at 1093°C (2000°F) down to 899°C (1650°F). Forging below 871°C (1600°F) is not recommended for these steels. |
Forming | tool steels can be readily formed by conventional methods in the annealed condition. |
Machinability | tool steels have excellent machinability at about 80% that of water hardening steels. |
Heat Treatment | tool steels are heated to 871-899°C (1600-1650°F) in the carburizing medium during the carburizing process. After being carburized, these steels are heated to 816-871°C (1500-1600°F) in order to be hardened and then held for 15 minutes and finally oil quenched. |
Applications | tool steels are used for low-temperature applications that include injection molds and die casting dies. |
Quenched and tempered steel, after quenching and high temperature tempering, has high tensile strength and yield strength, and can obtain fine grain structure. Its comprehensive mechanical properties are better than 40Cr steel. However, when the quenching temperature is not enough, the hardenability is poor. The cold deformation plasticity and machinability are medium, and the overheating sensitivity is small, but there is a tendency of temper brittleness and white spot sensitivity. It is generally used in the quenched and tempered state. It is used to manufacture various important parts with variable load and high load, such as locomotive connecting rod, crankshaft, push rod, propeller, cross beam, shaft sleeve bracket, stud, screw, non carburized gear, various gears and pins after nitriding treatment, high-pressure boiler water pump shaft (diameter less than 30mm), high-pressure cylinder, steel pipe and bolt (working temperature less than 420 ºC, 30MPa), etc. As tool steel, the steel can be used to make high-end hand tools, hardware tools, etc.
