 38CrMoAl steel is a commonly used typical nitriding steel, in which aluminum has a great affinity with nitrogen and is the main alloying element for forming nitrides and improving the strength and hardness of the nitrided layer. AlN is very stable and does not dissolve in steel at a temperature of about 1000 ºC. Due to the effect of aluminum, steel has good nitriding performance. After nitriding, the surface hardness of this steel can reach as high as 1100~1200HV (equivalent to 67~72HRC). Chromium and molybdenum in steel can also form nitrides, improve the hardness of the carburized layer, improve the hardenability and tempering stability of the steel, eliminate grain coarseness caused by aluminum, and improve the strength and toughness of the steel. In addition, molybdenum can also eliminate the tempering brittleness of steel.Production process
Nitrided steel is generally produced in a top bottom combined blown converter or electric furnace. Due to the high aluminum content of nitrided steel containing aluminum and the high viscosity of the molten steel, aluminum silicate inclusions are easy to form. The uneven distribution of aluminum in the steel results in dot like segregation, which affects the quality of the steel. Aluminum containing nitrided steel used as important parts should be remelted by electroslag remelting. After rolling or forging, nitrided steel should undergo normalizing treatment to improve its structure. Sometimes, in order to improve cutting performance, it is necessary to conduct complete annealing or incomplete annealing. After rough machining, the parts are subjected to quenching and tempering treatment, followed by finishing. In order to eliminate the residual stress caused by quenching, tempering and finishing, annealing can be conducted at 550~600 ºC. Finishing usually involves only nitriding the whitest layer on the surface of the part( ε Phase) is ground off and no longer processed.
The hardenability of 38CrMoAlA steel is not high, and its critical diameter is about 30 mm during oil quenching. If the thickness is less than 50mm, oil quenching can be used; For thicknesses exceeding 50mm, water quenching and oil cooling are often used. The decarburization tendency of 38CrMoAlA steel is relatively serious. If the surface decarburization layer is not completely removed, a needle-like nitride can easily form on the surface of the nitrided layer during nitriding, which not only reduces the hardness of the nitrided layer, but also makes the nitrided layer brittle. Steel with high aluminum content has a high viscosity of liquid steel, making it difficult to control metallurgical quality. Steel is prone to defects such as segregation, inclusions, hairlines, rock like fractures, and layered structures.
